Excellence = Competence + Character

I have seen too many times in people that competence don't always come with strength of character. In fact, more often than not, many people who are of exceptional competence are usually found wanting character-wise.

True, no man is absolute or perfect in himself really. That's one assertion I have also conspicuously reached during the lockdown. In fact, my conclusion is that, every effort at achieving perfection that is unilaterally dependent on human logic is merely a wild goose chase. Perfection is a divine order. Is it still okay to seek perfection? Yes, it is.

One thing we must however come to terms with is that, we must know and agree that competence will never take the place of character, neither will it happen vice versa. The mix of both remains unchallenged and the best.

Just like Mama Ibukun Awosika once mentioned, "I'll always prioritise hiring a man with the right attitude than the man with the right skills". This is simple. It is a lot easier and quicker to teach skills than it is to instill the right attitude in human.

For me, maybe I'll prioritise competence for a small and one-time job, and with trust on careful watch. But for a partnership, long term dealing, career channeling, friendship, relationship and on big matters, character will always come first. Everytime!

In essence, I'm saying that thesame way superficial beauty usually attract partners to themselves and it would take much more than that to sustain such relationship, it is thesame way you'll need quality character to keep and sustain a life that you earned via competence. Always strive to build both houses in you.

Excellence = Competence + Character
